dry dock iii - anchor chain

©  JANE MINTER 2013

"anchor chain"
dry dock iii
56 x 76 cm
Fabriano Cold Press 300g/m2
watercolour based on a series of my reference photos

Traditionally anchors and anchor chains are removed from boats and laid out on the dry dock floor ........I'm working on a series of studies and paintings exploring dry docks .

With "anchor chain"  I was inspired by  Nicholas Simmons techniques in "INNOVATIVE WATERMEDIA" DVD  by Creative Catalyst Productions

with special thanks to Nicholas Simmons

Love this kind of work. Requires a real creative mind to turn such subjects into a painting.

What can I say? This goes beyond outstanding. It speaks to me of boats, the sea, hardship, heartache and so much more. I absolutely adore it!

Un motivo aparentemente sencillo y sin embargo muy complejo de realizar.
Enhorabuena.

Feliz semana.

judy sandra chagua christiane laura cora anamaria renate + suzanne thank you all for your lovely comments we sail alot as a family ..i've helped re - painted alot of hulls . i love the boatyards . i've taken many photos over the years so hopefully slowly i will paint a series ... i was asked how i painted it on fb ... It's a complex subject to try and paint so I tried to simplify it ..... basically I used alot of masking fluid ...there are just two washes with minimum detail .
I drew free hand and masked a few sections of the chain then added the initial wash ... when it was dry I painted the red section of the chain and added some detail
I left it for a week to dry then I re - masked and masked the additional links in the background ..... I made a second wash ...instead of waiting for the wash to dry completely to remove the masking fluid I decided to try and remove some of the masking fluid to soften the hard edges whilst the painting was still damp ...definately could refine what I did .
many thanks to nick once again .

It looks and sounds (in the above comment of yours) like completely different experience for your manner and inclinations)). I like very much that you try new routes and inspire to do the same.
But still I like so much your cloud-breathing watercolor sketches.
And thank you for visiting.
