I love the play of opaque and transparent watercolour pigments and their properties .

The different characteristics and application of gouache with watercolour can create a endless variety of possibilities , subtle shades and beautiful effects . I personally see it as an opportunity and extension to explore and keep experimenting with the properties of both water based mediums .

Watercolour and gouache marry beautifully together . Artist have used them together for many centuries :

Underpainting to create luminosity
Creating washes , as with watercolour wet in wet , wet on dry , dry brush
Adding white gouache to watercolours creating opaques
Creating highlights /details

Characteristics of gouache:
Opaque
Luminosity
(With large particles in gouache the colour lies on the surface )
Water soluble so can be re activated re-wet and altered. ( as watercolour can )
A smooth flawless color field can be achieved
Dries fast

Many contemporary watercolour artists have and continue to use and explore watercolour and gouache ... John Blockley , Anne Blockley , Janine Gallizia and John Lovett to name a few

Whilst many other contemporary watercolour artist only use gouache or body colour to create highlights .

At school I used gouache / tempera at O level art and A level .

The London Art college Watercolour and Gouache course I did back in 2008 - 2010 gave an opportunity to work and explore both in watercolour and or gouache . Covering the history and techniques use by artist and illustrators alike . Gouache paintings of Mark Rothko , Henri Matisse etc gouache and watercolour paintings of Turner , Dürer , Gwen Jones , Klee etc

“How to paint like Turner “ is a beautiful book which explores many of Turners use of watercolour and titanium white and gouache .
